SARAJEVO, February 3 (FENA) - Deputy Chair of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković addressed yesterday at the 11th Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation at the United Nations (UN), the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
The meeting was chaired by the foreign ministers of Finland and Turkey, and was attended by representatives of the United States, Japan, Slovenia, Morocco and many other member states. Officials discussed mediation as a tool for peace agreements and conflict resolution.
During her address, Minister Turković pointed out that "learning from previous mistakes in mediation and conflict management is crucial in order to set the right approach in order to mitigate the danger of violent conflict in the future."
“We have to act earlier. Identify and offer mediation support before the conflict escalates. Second, we must act together. The risks posed by the conflict are so great that the international community, led by the Group of Friends, must work to re-establish consensus on support for mediation to defuse tensions, and poorly managed mediation efforts could exacerbate tensions or conflict,” she said.
She also stated that as a country that has to some extent been a "terrain" for a wide range of mediation efforts, as well as for modern, integrated engagement in peace building, BiH certainly recognizes the value of well-informed and well-structured mediation. It is much easier to bridge gaps and heal societies in mediation than in the post-conflict phase.
“Our experiences, if nothing else, are valuable lessons,” she stated, among other things.
