SARAJEVO, February 6 (FENA) – Local authorities in Sarajevo, a number of state officials and citizens gathered at the memorial site, laid flowers and marked the 28th anniversary of the Markale market massacre on Saturday, the place in which 68 civilians were killed on 5 February 1994 and the Day of Remembrance of all citizens of Sarajevo killed and wounded by the aggressors during the siege of the city from 1992 to 1995.

The first of the two massacres at the Markale Market, in downtown Sarajevo, took place when a 120 mm mortar shell fired from a Bosnian Serb artillery position killed 68 residents and injured 142.

Among those attending the anniversary gathering was a member of the BiH Presidency, Željko Komšić.

“On behalf of the generation that experienced all this during the war in BiH, especially in Sarajevo, on behalf of the families of those who suffered and on behalf of future generations, I think that no one has the right to forget what happened to Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, including this crime against the citizens of Sarajevo,” he said after he laid wreaths at the memorial site.

The Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Edin Forto, said that “we now live in a time of parallel realities.”

“It's unbelievable that there are those who do not believe in something that has been established as a fact in a hundred different ways,” he said.

The rapporteur for the Western Balkans in Germany’s Bundestag, Adis Ahmetović, also attended the gathering.

“This is something that should never happen again. That is why I came here today, to be here as a German politician and a member of the largest party in the Bundestag,” he said.

"I believe that the whole of Germany today stands with Bosnia and Herzegovina and will continue to support BiH in its aspiration of being a country of peace with a good future," Ahmetović emphasized.
