SARAJEVO, March 30 (FENA) - Presentation of key achievements such as the adoption of the Framework for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was adopted by the Council of Ministers of BiH in April 2021 and the proclamation of three generations of Business Leaders of Sustainable Development in BiH was, among other things, the goal of the final conference of the project called "Support for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Private Sector Engagement" held today in Sarajevo.

Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH Zoran Tegeltija emphasized at the opening of the meeting that in November, at the regional conference on the implementation of sustainable development goals, the importance of implementing sustainable development goals was recognized, which is a process of continuity and cooperation of all levels of government.

“This project is specifically one of the few that has achieved transformative and significant results in a short time, and is implemented by the United Nations Development Program in BiH with the financial support of the Government of Sweden. With a humble beginning and unawareness that the final reach of activities within the project will have such a significant effect in BiH and in both entities, Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH, the project established a new paradigm of development and affected almost all spheres of life in the country,” he said.

As the most significant event during the project, Tegeltija singled out the adoption of the Framework for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in BiH by the Council of Ministers, in April last year, as well as the entity governments.

“This complex document provides an analysis of current socio-economic trends and an overview of human rights, and offers possible development models and ways to accelerate development in the areas of social development, economic development and environmental protection while focusing on the importance of human capital for development and the universal principle of the United Nations that "No one shall be left out", he said.

As he said, for that reason, he pointed out the already traditional Award for Business Leaders of Sustainable Development, which is awarded during the Week of Sustainable Development. The Business Leaders Award, in three years and cycles, has attracted around 200 private companies to apply with their sustainable business practices and innovations.

Swedish Ambassador to BiH Johanna Stromquist told reporters before the meeting that Sweden has pledged to play a leading role in implementing the 2030 Agenda, have ambitious sustainable development goals so that no country would lag behind in these efforts.

“I am glad that we worked with the authorities to achieve the Framework for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals, which will then be implemented. It was an impulsive process. We have worked with all levels of government, as well as with the private sector. It is my pleasure to announce the launch of the next project for the implementation of the Framework for Setting Sustainable Development Goals, in order to ensure the implementation of what has been agreed,” she said.

UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald points out that in the past three years, the UN has made significant progress in working with the BiH authorities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for achieving the goals of sustainable development.

“This applies to every citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it has contributed to the development of the Framework and we have focused on areas such as gender, public administration, health, education, environmental protection. Now we are going to localize these efforts, that is, to the joint work of the local level and the entities and the state. However, none of this will be possible without the full involvement of the private sector, and we want to encourage their engagement with business awards,” she said.
