SARAJEVO, April 5 (FENA) - International conference on migration, which brought together key stakeholders dealing with irregular and mixed migration, emigration and humanitarian work in the field, including international organizations, domestic public institutions and civil society organizations, was held today at International Burch University in Sarajevo.

The conference was attended by more than a hundred participants from around the world, from Brazil, Colombia, USA, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Serbia, North Macedonia and BiH.

The aim of the conference is to map the current situation on the ground and the scope of scientific knowledge, which will lead to the formation of a sectoral alliance for better migration management.

"One of the goals of the conference is to support the academic community in addressing irregular and mixed migration. The participation of key domestic and international scientists and experts improves the importance of the Conference and confirms its relevance, taking into account current and expected migration flows, starting from the phenomenon of irregular migration, mixed migration, but also emigration and brain drain, which is especially interesting for our country and the region," said prof.dr. Alija Kožljak, director of the Center for Social Research at Burch International University and co-chair of the conference on migration.

The conference also seeks to support BiH in fulfilling its international obligations under various international agreements, as well as the Global Compact on Migration.

The Global Compact on Migration sets out 23 objectives to ensure "safe, orderly and regular" migration, including the protection of migrants from exploitation and human rights violations.

In her introductory address, the Head of the IOM Mission to BiH, Laura Lungarotti, emphasized the importance of this conference for the IOM, as it brings a view of migration from a social point of view, and not just as a security and humanitarian issue.

"Migration is a megatrend that will continue, so it is necessary to look for concrete solutions through a comprehensive view of migration. In BiH, the focus is on migrants in transit, but we should also focus on those leaving this country. It is the fourth year of implementation of the Global Compact on Migration and I am glad that we will gather in New York on this occasion and that representatives from BiH will be there," she said.

The Ambassador of Switzerland to BiH Daniel Hunn, the Ambassador of Greece to BiH Dimitrios Papandreou, prof. dr. Aleksandra Nikolić, Minister of Science, Higher Education and Youth of the Sarajevo Canton and academician prof.dr. Mirko Pejanović, Vice President of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of BiH were among the ones who addressed the conference.

The organizers of the Migration Conference 2022 are the Center for Social Research at Burch International and the Center for Competences for Humanitarian Negotiation (Geneva, Switzerland) with partners: OSCE Mission to BiH, IOM Mission to BiH, EU Delegation to BiH, Swiss Embassy in BiH, Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Foreign Policy Initiative and Harvard Kennedy School.
