SARAJEVO, April 10 (FENA) - The citizens of Sarajevo gathered yesterday at Susan Sontag Square in front of the National Theater to protest against the war in Ukraine and in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

A peaceful protest of citizens called "We stand with Ukraine", which gathered many celebrities, was organized by the Post-Conflict Research Center and civil society partner organizations.

Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, said that the citizens of Sarajevo understand the people of Ukraine best, that they stand with them, feel their suffering and pain, and with this peaceful gathering they are sending strong support from the capital of BiH.

"I am especially affected by the suffering of people in Ukraine. The daily suffering of the Ukrainian people reminds me of the suffering of Sarajevans and Bosnians and Herzegovinians during the aggression on BiH. That arouses emotions in us and what somehow causes the need to support the Ukrainian people," said Karić.

Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Ukraine in BiH, Serhii Miniailo, also attended the protest and addressed the participants asking them to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives for the freedom of Ukraine with a minute of silence.

"We have been fighting for 45 days and it is difficult to find words to describe my feelings. Anger, horror, rage, longing for revenge. It seems to me that these and any other words that describe emotions are too banal after what I see in photos and videos from Ukrainian cities," Miniailo pointed out, adding that he is convinced that no one can be neutral and indifferent to grief.

In Ukraine, as the director of the Sarajevo National Theater, Dino Mustafić, said, civilians are being killed, cities are being bombed, bombs are destroying populated areas and millions of people have been left homeless.

Speaking about the main messages they want to send from Sarajevo today, president of the Post-Conflict Research Center Velma Šarić said that this week was symbolically chosen when it marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the Sarajevo siege and the beginning of the war in BiH.
