WASHINGTON, May 13 (FENA) - Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko during her visit to Washington expressed the need for greater efforts by the EU and the US to preserve stability in the Western Balkans as a security issue for the European continent and mediation efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina are intensifying in order to reach an agreement on the necessary reform of the Election Law.

She discussed the issues at the State Department in meetings with Karen McDonald, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy and Human Rights, Ethan Rozenzweig, Director of Cultural Affairs and Student Exchange, and Gabriel Escobar, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans.

The meetings also discussed new initiatives to strengthen transatlantic student exchanges and professional exchanges between legislative staff, the Office of MP Zovko said.

As part of her visit to Washington, Zovko met with Senators Daimes and Johnson and Congressmen Cohen and Costa of the Democratic Party, as well as Congressmen Duncan, McMorris Rodgers and Lesko of the Republican Party.

"American colleagues have shown great interest in the current security situation in Europe," Zovko said, adding that they discussed developments in Ukraine and the consequences of the Russian invasion, including European sanctions and the energy and food security of refugees hosted in the European Union.

Zovko added that "the unfortunate attack on Ukraine's freedom and independence has resulted in the greatest unity between the EU and the US in a long time".

"Everyone I spoke to welcomed this common position and is looking forward to its further improvement," Zovko said.

In further meetings with the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the International Republican Institute (IRI), the German Marshall Fund, the CSIS, and the AICGS, Zovko also commented on the political prospects of the upcoming elections and their possible impact on EU relations with the US, the statement said.
