SARAJEVO, September 20 (FENA) - The Sarajevo Open Center (SOC), in cooperation with Communis with the support of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is implementing a campaign to strengthen the political participation of women in BiH entitled 'Even when you look a little closer, women are invisible'.

“With this campaign, we invite our fellow citizens to, when voting in the General Elections, take into account all the factors that influence the still low level of political participation of women, to reconsider their own potential prejudices, to help overcome all current structural obstacles that prevent women's equality in politics through giving reasonable support to female candidates in the General Elections that will be held on October 2 this year,” it is emphasized.

As the SOC states in a press release, although the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina stipulates a minimum of 40 percent of representatives of the underrepresented gender on electoral lists, the reality shows that on average only 20 percent of women participate in BiH parliaments/assemblies.

There are a number of obstacles that women in BiH political life encounter on the way to equal participation, both defined by the relevant laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the simple principle of parity.

“Women vote in the same proportion as men, as shown by data from the 2018 General Election. In those elections, women made up 50.1 percent of voters, but only 27.41 percent of the total number of voters were elected. Although they make up half of the voting body, women are still overlooked as worthy of attention and opportunities for equal legislative and executive roles within the government,” it is stated.

Without the participation of women and the female perspective in political life, we will not be able to achieve social development, which takes into account different starting positions for women and girls, in relation to boys and men, as well as equal outcomes for both in the fields of education, employment and work, health, sports and culture.
