SARAJEVO, December 15 (FENA) - The leaders of the European Union unanimously decided today in Brussels to grant candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina for EU membership.
Bosnia and Herzegovina formally applied for membership in the European Union to the Presidency of the Council of the EU on February 15, 2016.
After BiH submitted its application for membership, in December 2016, the European Commission presented Bosnia and Herzegovina with a detailed Questionnaire, which was answered in 14 months.
More than 1,300 representatives of different levels of government worked on the answers. 3,897 questions and 655 additional questions were answered.
The content of the responses served as the basis for deciding whether BiH deserved the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union.
However, a political decision on candidate status was made just today, and now the phase of opening accession negotiations should begin.
The European Council has the final say when it comes to enlargement, including the granting of candidate status and the start of accession negotiations with a potential future member of the Union.
