SARAJEVO, December 21 (FENA) - Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton Nihad Uk, commenting on the fact that Sarajevo is the world record holder for air pollution, said that they have been implementing multiple parallel processes for the last three to four years to reduce harmful emissions.

In the last three days, Sarajevo has once again been at the top of the list of the most polluted cities in the world, according to the AirVisual portal, which collects information from measuring stations from countries around the world.

Uk said that this is a long-term process and that the air in Sarajevo will not be clean even by the end of the current government's mandate, in 2026.

He explained that the experts assessed that the pollution factors are roughly divided into three parts: geographical location, traffic, and household furnaces.

Uk says that they cannot change the geographical location, but that they invest in city traffic, insulate public buildings, and change individual fire pits.

He emphasized that with the urban plan that is in the preliminary draft, the Government decided to build a tram line towards Dobrinja and Šip last Thursday.

''All this is a parallel process that will not end until 2026, but will reduce pollution to an acceptable level,'' concluded the Prime Minister Uk.

According to the latest air quality data, the air quality index (AQI) for Sarajevo was an alarming 235 on Tuesday morning, higher than in Dhaka, Bangladesh, or Delhi, India, while on Wednesday it was 240, significantly higher than the Pakistani city Lahore, where the air index was 200.

The capital of BiH is even more polluted today than before, with the application of intervention measures due to excessive air pollution.
