SARAJEVO, January 22 (FENA) – Convicted war criminal Novak Đukić, whose responsibility for the crime of killing of civilians on May 25, 1995, in Tuzla's Korzo has been proven by the Court of BiH by a judgment that has become final, has again avoided the "hand of justice".
This time, his failure to appear before the Belgrade Court that was to begin the procedure for taking over the execution of the 20-year prison sentence after his escape from BiH to Serbia in 2014, he justified with the alleged "hospitalization due to mental problems". Parents of the victims are outraged.
In February 2014, Mr. Đukić was released from prison after the BiH Constitutional Court overturned a ruling sentencing him to 25 years in prison, for wrongly applying the law. In June his sentence was reduced to 20 years, and his defense counsel informed the BiH Court several days later that he was in treatment in Serbia.
Đukić was found guilty by the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina for, as Commander of the “Ozren” Task Force of the Republika Srpska Army, on May 25, 1995, ordering the artillery platoon to shell Tuzla from the cannons, which resulted in the killing of more than 70 people. The warrant for his arrest was issued in October 2014 because he failed to appear for the sentence execution, after which Serbia was asked to take over the sentence execution.
