SARAJEVO, January 24 (FENA) - Citizens' Association for the Promotion of Roma Education "Otaharin" from Bijeljina today launched the campaign "Mayor - a friend of Roma", whose goal is to provide positive examples to strengthen the dialogue between city administrations or municipalities and Roma communities in BiH.

President of ‘Otaharin’ Dragan Joković said today in Sarajevo that the campaign is a part of the project "Joint Initiative for Strengthening Roma Civil Society in the Western Balkan Countries and Turkey" and was conceived as a sort of competition that will be conducted on the basis of questionnaires submitted to mayors / municipal mayors in all municipalities in BiH.

He explained that the mayors or heads of the municipalities in which the Roma live via the designated App will be able to answer questions as to how much they really are dealing with the problems of the Roma, respecting the action plans for the Roma, how much they have adopted in the local communities where they work, and how many projects they have implemented.

“This campaign should give a true overview of the good practices that are being implemented in BiH, and we all know that they do exist. We will promote good practices, and the best mayor or municipal mayor will be rewarded by going to Brussels on the occasion of the International Roma Day,” he said.

The project "Joint Initiative for Strengthening Roma Civil Society in the Western Balkan Countries and Turkey" is funded by the European Commission, and the Head of the Council of Europe's Office in BiH Drahoslav Štefanek, recalled that the CoE, by adopting the 2010 Declaration, affirmed political commitment to socio-economic inclusion of Roma with an emphasis on education, housing, employment, healthcare and protection against discrimination.

- The Council of Europe in BiH has the mandate to promote European policies for the inclusion of Roma and support all efforts of the state of BiH to solve the problems that the Roma people face. However, despite the efforts made by the international community and BiH as state, the situation in Roma communities is still worrisome and requires additional efforts,” he stressed.
