Roster of media professionals against gender-based violence established

SARAJEVO, January 25 (FENA) – Today in Sarajevo was established a Roster of media professionals dedicated to raising public awareness on gender-based violence, through cooperation, exchange of experiences and practices.

General Secretary of the Association of BiH Journalists, Borka Rudić, told the media that the Roster project implies the establishment of cooperation between journalists from different media and various parts of BiH, education on specific topics in the field of presenting gender-based violence, primarily violence against women and girls.

On the other hand, she added, this means a creation of a different perspective in BiH’s public space for the victims of violence, for this problem that needs to be addressed in a different and more efficient way.

“We all together, journalists, bloggers, representatives of different types of media who will work with various institutions, must show that this society has the capacity to fight against gender-based violence, to reduce it, to create a favorable environment for its understanding, and create new perspectives for victims,” Ms. Rudić stressed.

Head of the UN Women office in BiH, David Saunders, said that gender-based violence was a global problem that many talk about, but that there is also a lot of silent violence in smaller, rural communities. Those are precisely the cases where more attention needs to be paid because people are afraid to speak, and this is where the media has an important role.

“The media are the ones who can do more to raise awareness of both the public and the victims. The media have the role of activists because they can share information, encourage people not only to talk about these issues but also to encourage victims to sit and talk about what is happening to them, to simply be heard by someone,” Mr. Saunders said.

The role of joint activities is twofold, he said, because some journalists have been hired to work with institutions, or in the NGO sector, some are working in the media, and “we have to acknowledge our role, how we can contribute to addressing this problem”.

“It is very important to draw public attention to the existing problems, which is why this Roster, or network of media professionals, is important,” Mr. Saunders concluded.

The project is implemented by the Association of BiH Journalists with the support of UN Women office in BiH and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
