Media and rule of law - Journalists in BiH, Serbia and Kosovo face same problems

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 25 (FENA) - There is a certain type of instrumentalization in reporting on corruption and organized crime in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo - is one of the conclusions of the conference "Media and Rule of Law" organized by BIRN (Balkan Investigative Network).

The media have problems with access to information, while reporting is limited to technical capacities, and self-censorship is also very pronounced.

“The research conducted in BiH on this issue suggests that the largest number refers to the shorter news and the least to the research texts,” said Denis Džidić, editor of BIRN BiH.

Arben Qirezi of BIRN Kosovo said that pressure on the media is achieved through denying financial support, as most Kosovo media receive funds from state and public companies and are being punished by being denied financial support.

BIRN analyst Miloš Damnjanović said that the media in Serbia have unequal access to information, to which the privileged media, or "tabloids" have the primacy.

The middle must be sought between the protection of investigations and police information on the one hand and the media and public interest on the other, said Chief of Police Administration Novo Sarajevo, Muhamed Hasanović.

When it comes to curbing information leaks from investigative institutions and the judiciary, the Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Vranje, Danijela Trajković, said it was a problem in practice. According to her, the leak of information is most common in the police.

Journalists from BiH and Serbia participating in the conference are united in their claims that they hardly or not at all reach the information they seek from institutions under the Freedom of Access to Information Act. The institutions, they say, are waiting for a 15-day deadline to pass, after which they send a notice that they cannot provide the requested information, BIRN reports.
