USAID and local communities create jobs for 96 marginalized women

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 30 (FENA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) ‘s Marginalized Populations Support Program has supported the establishment and development of 96 businesses of marginalized groups of women who are business owners, and their family members are indirectly involved in the work.

These are the businesses started by women with disabilities, mothers of persons with disabilities, women from rural areas, victims of violence and unemployed young women in Konjic, Teslić, Tešanj, Zvornik, Rudo, Prijedor, Livno, Kalinovik and Visoko.

The process of supporting business development of marginalized groups of women began in early 2017, and the results are already visible through the increased home budgets and job creation, USAID said.

Businesses have been started in agriculture, livestock breeding, fruit growing, production and service activities, and the start-up and development of businesses meant a significant increase in the household budget, as this is mostly the only revenue.

One of the goals is also to increase the share of women in the labor market in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which currently stands at 43 percent and is the lowest in the region, and is also low compared to the world average of 52.5 percent.

Business start-ups were financed with 680,000 KM through the Business Support Fund for marginalized groups of women which was 50:50 funded by the USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Program and local government units in which the businesses were started.

The creation of the Fund seeks to create opportunities for sustainable development of entrepreneurship of marginalized groups of women, through encouragement to self-employment, and their greater and easier involvement in entrepreneurship and creation of new jobs.
