BRUSSELS, January 31 (FENA) – “A Dog’s Life – The Strays of Sarajevo”, a documentary film directed by Marie Slough, which warns of mistreatment of dogs and their struggle for survival in the streets of Sarajevo and torture that they often suffer in dog shelters, revealing the whole scope of this problem, was premiered last night at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The presentation of this achievement was organized by the representative in the European Parliament Davor Škrlec in cooperation with the European Parliament’s Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals and the international umbrella organization Eurogroup for Animals.

British actor and animal rights activist Peter Egan and veterinarian Roger Barlow traveled to Sarajevo to witness animal mistreatment and their complete disenfranchisement. The film follows their path from the street to the shelters whose poor condition strongly affects the viewer, following their suffering in such places, a kind of “dungeons” for dogs.

The screening in the European Parliament was followed by a panel discussion and presentation of the EU pledge on the humane management of stray animals, as well as an invitation for the representatives of the body to sign a petition.

“Cruel animal treatment that has lasted for years is contrary to BiH's state legislation, and as a potential candidate country for EU membership promoting high standards for animal rights protection, Bosnia and Herzegovina should take a more serious and consistent approach to addressing this problem,” said Mr. Škrlec.

Promoting the development of guidelines on the humane management of stray animal populations and advocating their application in the EU and beyond should be a priority for the European Parliament, the panel discussion concluded.

In 2009, Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the Animal Protection and Welfare Act and thus fulfilled one of the obligations under the Action Plan for Priority Implementation from the European Partnership with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite a relatively good legal framework that clearly prescribes conditions for the existence of shelters and pounds, they do not exist at all and those who do exist do not comply with the standards and thus constitute violations of the law.
