SARAJEVO, February 1 (FENA) - For the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a "Smoke-Free reception" was held in Sarajevo last night, marking the International No Cigarette Day, started in 1980, at the initiative of young people from Tuzla in BiH.

The organizer of the reception was the Association PROI which has been implementing a campaign "Smeta mi" (transl. "I do mind") for two years, and the organization was also assisted by the Public Health Institute of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, representatives of the World Bank and the Swiss embassy in BiH.

The attendees stressed the importance of fighting for a healthy living environment without tobacco smoke and appealed to the entities in BiH to adopt new laws on the control of the use of tobacco and tobacco products.

The essence of the laws is that individuals who want to consume cigarettes can do it, but in a way that does not endanger the health of anyone else, stressed at the ceremony David Cramer from the Swiss Embassy to BiH.

Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, the Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, said he would strongly lobby for the adoption of these entity laws, which are very close to European standards. He also said that Bosnia and Herzegovina could not become a member of the European Union if its legislation is not adapted to the European legislation.

Representatives of FBiH, World Bank, World Health Organization and many other guests also came to the reception.

During the reception, organizations and individuals were given awards for contributing to the creation of a healthy smoke-free environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the category of international organizations, special recognition was given to the EU Delegation to BiH and sportsman Tomislav Cvitanušić who won the recognition in the Smoke-Free celebrity category.

The prize in the category “Best journalism reporting on tobacco control” was awarded to the news site Klix.ba and a prize for a smoke-free facility was awarded to the Clinical Center in Sarajevo.

The Red Cross of the municipality of Novo Sarajevo, the company Symphony, the Association of High School Students of BiH and media houses: FBiH News Agency, BHRT, Avaz, and Radio Sarajevo, also received awards.

The Smoke-Free Reception was organized for the first time in BiH in an aim to highlight the benefits and cost-effectiveness of smoke-free entertainment and to motivate caterers to create a healthy environment in their facilities, supporting new legislation to control tobacco use.

The event venue, the restaurant “Druga kuća Lora”, was for this occasion completely devoid of tobacco smoke.

The winners of the awards were selected by civil society representatives and members of the BiH Smoke-Free Partnership Awards Committee.
