Zvizdić: There must be no politicization in meeting conditions on road toward EU

SARAJEVO, February 7 (FENA) - Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Zvizdić reiterated today that meeting the conditions regarding BiH's path to the European Union should not be a part of daily political games, adding that the responses to the European Commission's Questionnaire containing 16,000 pages and 1,100 laws will be submitted by the end of this month.

Commenting on the EU Strategy for the Western Balkans, which was presented yesterday, Mr. Zvizdić said it clearly indicated that Western Balkan countries remain important for the EU, and it was also confirmed that the door to the EU is still open to those countries.

It is also important for him that mechanisms will be defined that will prevent a country from blocking other countries to become EU members after it and has urged all political representatives to commit themselves to reforms and social and economic issues, bearing in mind that a lot of work is ahead of BiH in the coming years.

“The Strategy does not set any specific deadlines, although there was various disinformation in the BiH media related to deadlines and that claimed that BiH would become a member by 2033. It all depends on the speed of meeting the conditions of the countries themselves,” he underscored.

He pointed to the eight-year-long blockade of European processes in BiH, saying it was good that this strategy was not published in 2015, because BiH would be very poorly positioned in it at that time, since all European and NATO integration processes were at a halt.

Mr. Zvizdić stressed that in 2008 BiH was the leader in the region, but then it all came to a halt which is why Montenegro, Serbia and Albania all got their candidate status before BiH and he urged for a return to reforms in order to speed up the dynamics of EU integration.

“The European future of BiH is guaranteed. BiH’s position in the Strategy is such that we have been given a message that, in line with our engagement, if reforms, social and economic issues are put in the top spot and we move away from the unproductive pre-election campaign, we can expect rapid progress, that we will soon open some chapters and close the others,” Mr. Zvizdić said.

Regarding work of the Council of Ministers, 70 percent of the goals from the Reform Agenda has been reached, so he expressed the satisfaction that the forecasts of those who have “the intent on blackening the situation in BiH” have not made true.
