SARAJEVO, March 6 (FENA) - The Sava River Watershed Agency in Sarajevo today hosted a handover ceremony of computer equipment for the establishment of a Flood and Early Warning System on the Sava River Basin.

The equipment was delivered to the competent institutions under the support of the US Government to the countries signatories of the Sava River Basin Agreement.

Expressing gratitude to the US Government on the donated IT equipment, Sava River Watershed Agency Director Sejad Delić said that this system had been initiated in June 2016 at a joint meeting in Zagreb and that the goal of the project is to enhance the quality of early warning on the Sava basin, as well as to improve the flood warning capacity of this river basin.

The beneficiaries of this project are Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and the International Sava River Basin Commission.

“This project allows us to predict floods jointly through a single platform and provide information to competent institutions earlier so that we can act in a timely manner in flood protection and reduce the consequences and risks of flooding,” said Mr. Delić.

Every country beneficiary of this project has received IT hardware equipment donated from the United States, and in BiH these institutions the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of FBiH, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Republika Srpska, Department of Security of Brčko District and the hydrometeorological institutes of FBiH and RS, the Public Institution Waters of Srpska, as well as the Sava River Watershed Agency, in which one of these servers has been installed. The value of the project is estimated at 1.9 million dollars.

US Ambassador to BiH Maureen Cormack said that it was glad to see the results of activities being carried out for just over two years with the aim of providing the citizens of BiH with a strong resource for predicting and early warning of floods.

“This system is the result of cooperation lasting more than a decade between the members of the International Sava River Basin Commission and is a concrete proof that Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks and Montenegrins can work together. By working together, you can make the world a little better, by giving everyone who lives alongside the Sava River Basin a much better flood protection. This system would not be able to provide accurate forecasts without cooperation, and that is why it is such a great example,” Ms. Cormack said.

She expressed gratitude to the European Command of the US Military Forces on the donation of equipment as well as to the US Army Corps of Engineers who helped design the system.

“This system is just a tool and depends on dedicated professionals, like people who are here today with us. What's more, it will function only with the constant cooperation of all sides,” Ms. Cormack emphasized.
