Sava River Basin flood warning system handover ceremony held in Sarajevo

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 7 (FENA) – A ceremony for the official handover of the Flood Forecast and Warning System for the Sava River Basin was held at the premises of the Sava River Watershed Agency in Sarajevo.

The project was implemented as part of the support of the United States Government to the states signatories of the Framework Agreement and cooperation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers - USACE.

The ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to BiH Maureen Cormack and Chairman of the International Sava River Basin Commission and Secretary of the BiH Ministry of Communications and Transport Igor Pejić.

The forecast and warning system for the floods in the Sava River Basin consists of several models, the main and most complex of which is the joint hydrological model for the entire river basin and sub-basins of the Sava River, and the hydrological model of the Sava River and main tributaries and is entirely financed by the US Government, including LIDAR recording and the purchase of complete equipment.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the equipment was delivered to eight competent institutions: Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of FBiH, RS Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, FBiH Hydrometeorological Institute, Hydrometeorological Institute of RS, PI Waters of Srpska, and the Brčko District Government - Public Safety Department.

Within the US Government’s support, the transfer of knowledge from the US Corps of Engineers is crucial, crowned with a closing workshop that will be held from 15 to 17 May this year in Zagreb, including the closing ceremony attended by US Ambassadors in all the Sava River Basin states.

On this occasion, Mr. Pejić thanked Ambassador Cormack for the engagement and support of the US Government, and he also informed her about the importance of this system after the floods of 2014, and all activities of the Sava Commission and the Ministry concerning the Sava River Basin, said the BiH Ministry of Communications and Transport.
