TESLIĆ, March 11 (FENA) - Two biogas plants have been built so far in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at farms in Šamac and Banja Luka, and experts believe that the sector is highly cost-effective and attractive, but that the entrepreneurs need help from the state.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is ready to provide support to the development of this sector.

The USAID Director in BiH Peter Duffy believes that the country has potential to develop biogas plants, equally well as in Croatia and Serbia.

He believes there are numerous advantages of using biogas. At a workshop held in Teslić, he said that this kind of production requires a lot of risks, investments and legal basis, but the benefits are plentiful.

"If it turns out that there is interest in BiH, we will help the authorities to turn the idea into reality," said Duffy.

USAID in BiH has delegated Fahrudin Kulić for the biomass utilization component for energy purposes under the project "Investing in the Energy Sector" project, and he believes that biogas plants are needed for environmental protection because they allow proper management of livestock manure and represent an additional source of income.

With the aim of promoting and developing this sector, from the point of view of investors and farmers, the USAID’s project “Investing in the Energy Sector - USAID EIA'', USAID/Sweden FARMA II project and GIZ Renewable Energy Promotion (GIZ ProRE) held a workshop in Teslić titled "Biogas power plants - an investment opportunity for the agricultural sector".
