ITUC urges FBiH Government to respect the independence of BiH CITU

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 15 (FENA) - The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CITU) stated that the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation had sent a letter to the FBiH Government following a complaint by the Trade Union that the Government "is blocking the work of the FBiH Economic and Social Council (ESC) with the aim of direct influence on selection of BiH CITU management.

In this letter, the ITUC asks the FBiH Government to respect the full independence and autonomy of the Trade Union as a social partner when it comes to the election of members of the delegation to the FBiH ESC.

“We are writing to you in order to express deep concern over the information we received from one of our members from Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the month-long deadlock in social dialogue and the suspension of the work of the Economic and Social Council for the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, although there are no justifications for this delay and interruption.

Namely, we were informed that on 7 March 2018, the FBiH Government informed the ESC for the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina that the conditions for the ESC session had not been met, thus directly interfering with and stopping the functioning of the social dialogue in relation to very important issues for workers and the citizens of the Federation of BiH,” it is written, among other things, in the letter signed by General Secretary Sharan Burrow.

It goes on to point out that it is obvious that the first step would be to restore social dialogue by applying the Agreement on the Establishment of an ESC for the territory of the Federation of BiH, which represents an institutional framework for tripartite social dialogue in which social partners independently decide on their members in the ESC.

“We firmly believe that it is in the best interest of all social partners to avoid unnecessary tensions and conflicts in the society,” concludes the letter of the ITUC General Secretary.
