SARAJEVO, March 15 (FENA) - Financial support to the media must not imply change in editorial policies in return, stated media researcher Brankica Petković today at a roundtable dedicated to financing of the media from the budgets in BiH.

The Media Center in Sarajevo, in partnership with the Center for Media Development and Analysis (CRMA), and in cooperation with the Anti-Corruption Agency (APIK), hosted a roundtable on 'Allocating money for the media from the budgets’.

“In the West, media funding from public resources has been a practice that has existed for decades. Media receive support through lower tax rates, through direct subsidies, etc.” Petković explained.

The problem is, as she noted, when money is directed to the media that support those in power.

In this case, emphasized Petković, public funds are spent in destruction of the media, not their development.

The roundtable was also an opportunity to present a report in which the Media Center gave an overview of financing of the media from the budgets, the situation in the EU, and recommendations on how to make the best use of these allocations in BiH.
