Čović: I am certain BiH will join EU together with Serbia and Montenegro (VIDEO)

SARAJEVO, March 19 (FENA) - A conference on the issue of demography in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be organized in the next two months, especially in the context of people leaving the country, a member of the BiH Presidency, Dragan Čović, announced today.

He believes that this is a trend that is present in the world, stating that it is estimated that there are around 20 million people that have moved from their homes, adding that in BiH there is an additional problem of large departure of young people with an imbalance in the births vs. deaths ratio.

He reminded that in 2013, when the population census took place, there were 540,000 Croats or 15.5 percent, but now there are 70,000 to 80,000 less of them, claims Mr. Čović, but also says that Bosniaks and Serbs are leaving BiH as well.

He adds that in 2013, there were 3.7 million inhabitants, and now, he believes, there are only three million of them and all of this is the reason for the organization of an expert meeting to point to these problems, where experts, not politicians, would give proposals for a solution to this issue.

He reminded that the Foreign Policy Strategy was adopted and that it brings all the important issues for conducting foreign policy, although he said the fact that it took so long was shameful.

He commented on the issue of the Election Law and suggestions offered, pointing out that the minimum of changes concerning the Croat National Assembly (HNS) and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), presided by Mr. Čović, must refer to the election of members of the BiH Presidency and the House of Peoples of the FBiH Parliament for ensuring the protection of legitimate representation of the people.

He believes that imposing a solution by the High Representative in BiH would be a step backwards, because if BiH political representatives are not capable of implementing the Constitutional Court's judgments, then it cannot be expected that BiH becomes a full member of the European Union, reminding that the Constitutional Court had annulled the imposed decisions of the Office of the High Representative.

At this year's general elections, he expects 80 percent of Croat votes, which is a legitimate representation of that people in the government institutions at all levels, adding that those who do not have a permanent interest in the so-called third entity are the ones always talking about it and this has been happening for the past 15 years.

Mr. Čović is also certain that BiH, together with Serbia and Montenegro, will be a member of the European Union in 2025, although according to the previous experience, seven years is not enough, and these countries are far ahead of BiH on the European path, but there is a chance for BiH and that “all is up to us”.

“I am convinced that after the elections, we will have a clear plan for entering the negotiating process next year and opening the chapters, and through these chapters we will focus on the rule of law and the fight against crime and corruption, the manner of electing judges and prosecutors, and the relationship between courts at all levels. The negotiating chapters will force us to do this,” he underlined.

He expressed optimism that if the amendments to the Election Law were adopted on time in the following month and a half, BiH could get a candidate status for membership in the European Union by the summer.

“There is no expansion without BiH. Due to the overall atmosphere, I cannot imagine the possibility of two eastern neighbors entering the EU without us entering together with them,” said the member of the BiH Presidency, Dragan Čović.
