Čović meets with ambassadors Cormack and Kohorst

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 19 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency Member Dragan Čović held a meeting with US Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia Robert Kohorst and US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Maureen Cormack.

The topics of discussion were the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, regional circumstances and relations with neighboring countries.

Mr. Čović informed his collocutors on his views on the above issues, stressing that Croatian politics in BiH is honestly and transparently on the track of Euro-Atlantic integration, in which it has a leading role.

The collocutors also discussed amendments to the Election Law that need to be adopted in accordance with the decisions of the BiH Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights.

Mr. Čović emphasized the importance of protecting the constitutional principle of legitimate representation, that is, of the democratic integrity of all three constitutive peoples in the election of members of the BiH Presidency, as well as representatives at all other administrative and political levels, which is especially significant for Croats as the least numerous constituent people in BiH, stated the BiH Presidency.

He expressed the expectation that this problem will be resolved in the period before the general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina with minimal changes to the Election Law. "This would allow for constitutional changes in the next term and at the same time it would significantly dramatize the reform activities, so that BiH, together with the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro, becomes a member of the European Union in2025."

As a major problem, he stressed the frequent instrumentalization of the mentioned issues in the context of the pre-election campaign, which has begun very early in BiH.

The same applies to other significant reforms that are taking place in the context of European integrations, such as the rule of law, judicial reform, the fight against corruption... He stressed that in all these areas BiH will strive to apply good solutions from EU member states that inherit related legal systems.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Čović expressed confidence that the cooperation between the two countries will intensify in the coming period, with a significantly larger number of meetings of officials at all levels, the BiH Presidency stated.
