Media should set citizens free from atmosphere of fear during election campaign

JAHORINA, March 20 (FENA) - Media obligations in the election process is the main topic of the International Conference "Free and Fair Media - Fair Elections", which is being held today at Jahorina, within the project Monitoring Media in the Election Process.

The Project for the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections "Pod lupom", within the BASE project, is implemented by the Consortium Association of BiH Journalists/BORAM.

In his introductory remarks, Vladimir Pandurević from the Delegation of the European Commission emphasized the importance of the participation of representatives of the countries of the region (Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and BiH) at this gathering, and said that it was important to have civil society stakeholders able to communicate with the responsible authorities.

In his words, it is very important that the whole process is brought closer to the citizens because the whole process is being conducted for the benefit of the citizens.

Vehid Šehić of the "Pod lupom" Coalition, which brings together six non-governmental organizations from all over BiH with experience in monitoring the election process, stressed the importance of cooperation with neighboring countries, especially the media, since a large number of BiH citizens have dual citizenship. We are also witnessing that BiH politicians are being hosted by the media from the region and often manipulate the situation. That is why Mr. Šehić believes that the role of public services in the countries of the region is especially important.

He further states that it is evident that the media, including the public ones, favor certain options, creating an unhealthy atmosphere, an atmosphere of fear.

“The media should, with their approach in the campaign, set the citizens free from fear, so that they can freely express their will,” said Mr. Šehić.

At the conference, the phenomenon of "false" news imposed itself as one of the inevitable topics, in connection to which the participants said that this region was a "champion" in fake news.

The conference discusses the role of the media in democratic processes, especially during the election period when public communication intensifies. The emphasis is on fair and professional reporting on election events and political subjects’ campaigns. The project is dedicated to the citizens - to what extent they believe in the election process, what principles guide them when they decide on whom to vote for and from which media they draw the most information.
