MOSTAR, Mar 23 (FENA) - On the occasion of the global campaign entitled Earth Hour in BiH, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) calls for co-operation with the aim to revitalize the internationally protected wetland habitats, pointing that only income from a few hours of the work of the hydroelectric power plants, which threaten them, are enough for their salvation.
The WWF singles out the degradation of the internationally protected wetland habitats of the Hutova blato and the Livanjsko Poljo Valley.
"Ten years ago the WWF started work on the protection of wetland habitats of Hutovo Blato and the lIvanjsko Polje Valley. The WWF's research team points to the significant degradation of the ecosystem of the internationally recognized wetland habitats, and concludes that the biggest reason for that is the redirection of water exclusively for the generation of electricity, "explained the WWF manager in BiH, Zoran Mateljak.
Mateljak points out that the income of HEPPs from the work of only a few hours per month, which exploit water from the marshes, are enough for the salvation and revitalization of the wetland habitats.
"We want to point out that the solution to this problem is at hand and that we together can preserve the habitats . The marsh- lands not only give an important contribution to the richness of life and the biodiversity of the Balkans, but also offer a number of important services to the local population, " Mateljak said.
This year's Earth Hour is marked on March 24 under the slogan "Connect2Earth".
In our region, through the Earth Hour, WWF will highlight the connection between biodiversity and climate changes . WWF adds “Connect2Rivers” to the slogan “Connect 2 Earth” and the whole initiative will focus on the protection of freshwater ecosystems, marsh-lands, and rivers.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina WWF focuses on the marsh-lands and urgent need for their revitalization.
This year, too, WWF calls for joining Earth Hour, to which numerous cities in BiH have responded. The essential lights will be turned off in Mostar, Banja Luka, Doboj and Sarajevo, and every year new cities and municipalities join the campaign.
