Wigemark: Local communities bearers of EU integration process

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 23 (FENA) - The Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative to BiH Lars-Gunnar Wigemark hosted the seventh debate on local economic and sustainable development, held in Vitez, within the project "Local Community Takes Initiative".

Participants in the debate, representatives of the economic and civic sector, local government and youth, through active participation, discussed a number of topics important for the local community in the process of European integration.

“Through the debates that we conduct in 15 local communities in BiH, we want to discuss the real problems, issues and dilemmas that citizens have about the EU accession process, because we firmly believe that local communities are the bearers of the European integration process,” said Mr. Wigemark and pointed out that strong local communities were the foundations of a stable and regulated state.

He added that one of the examples of launching the initiative from the local level was the Municipality of Vitez, which in a very short time established quality inter-municipal cooperation, attracted investors and enabled economic development.

Emphasizing the significance of the project "Local Community Takes Initiative", German Ambassador to BiH Christiane Hohmann stressed the support BiH has in the process of joining the EU.

“It is important that all citizens know that the EU wants this country in its composition and we are here to help them overcome all the obstacles and challenges as soon as possible,” said Ambassador Hohmann, mentioning that one of the key projects aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship in BiH, implemented by the GIZ, is financed by the EU and the German Government.

“Croatia has received numerous benefits by joining the EU, and today it is a democratically, legally and economically stronger country, which as a full member can take part in making all important decisions at the European level,” said the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia, Ivan Del Vechio, expressing the belief that BiH can equally well follow the example of its closest neighbor.

The participants of the debate took the opportunity to discuss with regional and domestic experts the topics of public-private partnership, resolving issues and support to the non-governmental sector through EU funds. The participants also showed interest in establishing business incubators and developing social entrepreneurship through projects aimed at employment and self-employment of young people and ethnic minorities.

After the debate, an information and educational fair was organized in which representatives of projects funded by the EU and other donors, which directly contribute to the economic and sustainable development of local communities, the EU Delegation to BiH stated.
