SARAJEVO, March 29 (FENA) - The German national and largest European airline, Lufthansa, and a member of the Star Alliance association, today at the Sarajevo International Airport, marked the 20th anniversary of the regular international air link Munich - Sarajevo - Munich.

“Lufthansa was one of the first airlines that opened its airline operations from our airport after the end of the war, which significantly contributed to the reconnecting of Sarajevo with the rest of Europe and the world, the normalization of life in Sarajevo, and strengthening of the economy of our country,” said the General Manager of the Sarajevo International Airport Armin Kajmaković at a press conference to mark 20 years of successful business cooperation between the Sarajevo Airport and Lufthansa.

Kajmaković recalled that the first flight that Lufthansa conducted was on 29 March 1998, only a year and a half after the Sarajevo International Airport was reopened for civilian air transport.

Over the past few years, Lufthansa covers about ten percent of the traffic at the Sarajevo Airport only with this air link. Added to this the three Lufthansa Group members that also operate from this airport (Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Eurowings), the total share of the Lufthansa Group represents more than a quarter of the total number of passengers transported from the Sarajevo Airport.

“Since the arrival of Lufthansa, over ten million passengers have travelled via the Sarajevo Airport, and we recorded significant growth in the past two years. This year we expect to have one million passengers. These figures require ambitious and extensive development projects that will accompany this growth and will provide the capacities to service two million passengers per year. We are doing this in order to continue providing the best quality service to all our passengers, customers and business partners, but also with the goal of further growth, including the establishment of additional air links,” said Kajmaković.

German Ambassador to BiH Christiane Hohmann said that she had the great honor and privilege to attend the marking of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of air link Munich - Sarajevo - Munich, and cooperation between Lufthansa and the Sarajevo Airport.

“Lufthansa expanded this connection with Germany and the EU at that time by introducing new flights together with Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Eurowings, and now it covers 25 percent of all the flights from the Sarajevo Airport,” said Hohmann, adding that these flights all always fully booked in both directions.

She noted that the trade exchange between the two countries has significantly improved and that this relationship is now at level than it was ever before, which means that BiH is exporting to Germany much more than it has ever done before.

“In the past 20 years, German companies have invested 350 million euros in BiH and intending to stay here and strengthen business cooperation,” said Hohmann.

Senior Sales Director for Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe for the Lufthansa Group Peter Pullem said that today's event shows Lufthansa’s commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina as the first European airline group that has linked a young country with Western Europe and the world.

“Our success would not be possible without our partners and customers. We look forward to continuing to provide services and a flexible network to the travelers in the region,” said Pullem.
