Street campaign "Say It to Their Face" to mark World Health Day

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 8 (FENA) - The PROI Association in cooperation with the Association of high school students in BiH, the Red Cross Novo Sarajevo and the European Association of Law Students (ELSA) on the occasion of World Health Day organized in Sarajevo a street campaign with a motto "Say It to Their Face".

Several hundred citizens participated in the "Say to Their Face" street campaign and in this way sent out messages to the FBiH Ministry of Health, the government and the FBiH parliamentarians asking for the urgent adoption of the Law on Control and Limited Use of Tobacco, and Other Tobacco and Smoking Products in FBiH.

Last year, the draft of this law was adopted by the Government of FBiH and the Parliament of FBiH, and in October last year public debates were also conducted.

However, the bill has not yet been referred to a further procedure, which does not provide support to health and life of FBiH citizens in the segment of tobacco smoke and health protection.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has one of the highest prevalence degrees for smoking in Europe. Only in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 2015, it is reported that ¾ of all deaths can be attributed to the diseases that have the biggest risk factors in smoking and/or tobacco smoke exposure.

"We want new and better law and we want it now!”, "Ban Smoking Indoors!", Smokers too support this law!” were some of the message from the citizens.

According to a survey conducted by the Economics Institute in Sarajevo by the end of 2016, smoking ban in indoor public places is supported by more than 70 percent of surveyed in FBiH. Smoking ban is also supported by 90.80 percent non-smokers and 49.60 percent of smokers.
