Meron: Hopefully, the final judgment in Karadžić case will come in December 2018

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 19 (FENA) - My goal is, although at this moment I cannot promise anything, that the final verdict of the former President of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadžić be pronounced in December 2018, said in an interview with BHRT President of the Residual Mechanism and former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Theodor Meron.

Speaking about the second instance verdicts in the Karadžić and Mladić cases, Theodor Meron said in an interview that it is too early to determine the date in the case of Ratko Mladić because the hearing has not yet been completed.

“As for Karadžić's case, we will hold a hearing in the appellate proceedings next week in The Hague. It will take two days and we are making good progress in this case so far. And my goal is, if possible, because we have not yet begun with the hearing, to have the final judgment in December 2018, but I cannot make any definite promises,” said Meron.

He added that Šešelj’s verdict came almost a year before it was planned.

Meron commented for BHRT the fact that the verdicts produce various reactions, and he said that ethnic groups and victims still carry strong feelings about what had happened.

“I sympathize and share the pain of the victims. It is natural that different groups would see our judgments differently. But, I think it is important in long term to be aware that we are an institution that is guided by the law and facts. A belief that I can share with you is that over time, people have become increasingly convinced that we have been doing the right thing, because we are not servants of any single country or political system. We serve the law," Meron said.

People will sometimes be more pleased, and sometimes less, says Meron, but the judges should not be interested in that.

“Doing this job, we cannot be guided by notions whether we have met the needs or interests of one group or another. Then we would be politicians. And you do not want me to be a politician, but to be a judge that implements the law,” said Theodor Meron in an interview with BHRT.

Speaking about what the citizens of BiH and other countries in the region can expect from justice, he said that it is necessary to understand that international courts cannot do everything by themselves, but they have to work in cooperation with governments of individual states and their justice systems.
