Bosnia and Herzegovina needs new generations of politicians

FENA

SARAJEVO, April 23 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina needs new generations of politicians, it needs young politically engaged people who need to participate more actively in the EU integration process of BiH and its progress on the European path, it is the main conclusion of the roundtable participants organized with the Alumni Network of the School for Political Studies of the Council of Europe, which is being held today in Sarajevo.

The joint initiative of the Office of the EU Special Representative to BiH (EUSR) and the Council of Europe "Youth in Political Parties" was launched at the roundtable, aimed at opening a dialogue with young members of political parties from all over BiH allowing them to participate constructively in consultations on the EU matters.

Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative to BiH, Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, who opened today's event with an introductory address, expressed satisfaction with the fact that women representatives of political parties also attend the roundtable.

In Wigemark’s opinion, women are still insufficiently represented in politics, and their participation could be beneficial in the challenging processes for BiH in the coming period.

Wigemark extended a message to young political leaders in BiH saying that the process of EU integration and potential BiH membership in the EU should be taken seriously and that they should begin to deal with practical tasks and engage in technical activities, whether it be agricultural policies, meeting the EU phytosanitary standards or any other issues.

“Young people represent a motor that should lead BiH forward in the process of necessary reforms,” said the Head of the EU Delegation.

He noted that young politicians from different ethnic groups and political parties have much in common, among other, the society and environment which they live in.

“I am not just talking about protection of living environment, but also the political environment from unnecessary pollution. These young people are those who will clean the living and political space,” concluded Wigemark.

Head of the Council of Europe Office, Ambassador Drahoslav Stefanek, also addressed the media, saying that the focus of today's roundtable in on EU integration and the process of BiH's accession to the European Union, while the discussion will focus on the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
