Courts in BiH conclude 563 court settlements during 'Court settlement weeks'

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 30 (FENA) - The first instance and second instance courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina concluded 563 court settlements during the "Court settlement weeks" from April 16 to 27.

The majority of court settlements were concluded at the Municipal Court in Tuzla (94), the Basic Court in Banja Luka (79), the Basic Court in Gradiška (40), the Basic Court in Sokolac (30) and the Municipal Court in Sarajevo (28).

The most favorable for concluding a court settlement were the cases related to the collection of utility and similar services of small value, labor disputes, payment of debts and claims, payment of unpaid wages and severance pay, compensation for damages, division of property and real estate in joint ownership, arrangement of property borders etc.

According to the latest data analyzed and monitored by the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH HJPC), from the beginning of the year to date, a total of 2,467 court settlements have been concluded.

This concerns the method of peaceful settlement of disputes that has been more commonly applied since 2012, since the beginning of the actual implementation of various activities for improving the work of the courts within the Judicial Efficiency Improvement Project financed by the Government of Norway and the Government of Sweden and the Efficiency Judicial Rehabilitation Project II financed by the Government of Norway.

Bearing in mind that the court settlement is one of the least used ways of resolving disputes in the jurisprudence of BiH, the BiH HJPC is pleased that citizens accept this method of resolving disputes that is faster and more efficient, and the parties themselves are more satisfied with the outcome of the case and court service.

At the same time, the HJPC BiH is pleased that the courts show readiness to change their approach to work and improve the efficacy of judiciary and court procedures, reducing the number of unresolved cases and providing better services to citizens.

The BiH HJPC, in cooperation with the courts, will continue to promote peaceful ways of resolving disputes and to continuously implement measures that influence the efficient processing of cases, which is in line with the recommendations of the European Commission presented within the framework of the Structured Dialogue on Justice between BiH and the EU and the measures envisaged in the BiH Justice Sector Reform Strategy, the HJPC stated.
