Garrett: It is in the US interest to have stable and democratic BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 3 (FENA) - Congressmen Thomas Garrett, Joe Barton and Scott Perry, wrote a letter to US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell, asking the State Department for the United States to reaffirm its leading role in Bosnia and Herzegovina".

The congressmen point out that a failure in amending the BiH Election Law could lead to political instability and further infiltration of unwanted forces in BiH and the Balkans.

Republican Congressman Thomas Garrett from Virginia, as a member of the US Congressional Affairs Committee and one of the signatories of the letter to Assistant Secretary Mitchell, told the daily newspaper Oslobodjenje that the time has come for the United States to take a leading role in BiH in order for its politicians to reach a common solution.

“First of all, I am concerned about preserving peace, stability and democracy in BiH.

This issue concerns the rule of law and the implementation of decisions of the Constitutional Court of BiH and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

In order for BiH to join the EU and NATO, which I firmly believe it can, it must have a government that respects the rule of law.

More specifically, I am afraid that a vacuum will arise if BiH does not act and if the US and Europe do not demand a solution for this deadlock. Here, I am thinking of Russia, Turkey and radical Islamists, who have increased their interference and presence in BiH. Russia is already heavily arming the Serbs, and radical Islamists already have their shelter in Bosnia. Without resolution, the fear of violence and chaos is not far ahead, and US allies in NATO are not ready for it,” said Garrett.

He stressed that securing a stable and democratic Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the interest of the United States and the Congress and State Department should continue to work with the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The future of Bosnia and Herzegovina is in the European Union and NATO, and if it resolves the problems related to the Election Law, by implementing the decisions of the Constitutional Court, it will show that the country is conducting serious reforms,” said, among other things, Congressmen Garrett.
