SARAJEVO, May 8 (FENA) - Organized by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of the Sarajevo Canton and the Memorial Fund of SC, the beginning of the Open Door Days of the Tunnel D-B Memorial Complex was held today as part of the manifestation "Days of Sarajevo Canton".
The open door days of this facility which was important in the defense of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina are being held for the fifth consecutive year, and this year they will run from March 13 to May 15, when free admittance for students of nine grades of elementary schools from Sarajevo Canton will be provided.
Minister of Veterans Affairs Muharem Fišo visited this complex today and, on this occasion, said that the "Tunnel D-B" was the nerve center of the city of Sarajevo and the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“In the city, besides food and medicine, through at that time the only connection with the rest of BiH and the whole world, came the hope that we can survive the aggression and defend the country. The significance of this tunnel, known as the "Tunnel of Rescue", is enormous and we will continue activities on the renovation of this complex, which is visited by more than 130,000 visitors annually,” Mr. Fišo said.
He added that activities on the organization of the program for 19 May - "Night of Museums" were underway, as well as for the 30th anniversary of the digging of the Tunnel, the SC Press Service said.
The tunnel was dug in 1993 under the airport runway, which gave Sarajevo its only entrance and exit.
In the following just two years, two million passages vital for the inhabitants of the besieged city of Sarajevo were recorded.
