FENA Press release

SOFIA/SARAJEVO, May 17 (FENA) - Chair of the BiH Presidency Bakir Izetbegović addressed at the plenary session of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia today.

He welcomed Declaration of the Summit on behalf of BiH and repeated that BiH joins the declaration.

"It is very important that we send a strong message from this summit confirming European perspective for the entire region of Western Balkans. BiH welcomed the launch of specific initiatives for improving infrastructural connectivity, as well as connectivity between people. We appreciate ongoing engagement of the EU in strengthening political and economic relations between the EU and Western Balkan region but also within the region," said Chair of the BiH Presidency.

He emphasized that BiH has given its contribution to improving those relations by taking series of activities in implementing priority measures within preparations for the summit in Sofia.

"BiH is committed to regional cooperation in area of economic, infrastructural, energy and security connectivity – through mechanisms such as the Berlin Process and Connectivity Agenda. We see that as a path towards building of trust, improving relations and creating a tangible economic prosperity for the well being of our citizens. We are committed to finding mutually acceptable solutions for all open issues and bilateral disputes. Positive example of our efforts is the Border Agreement we signed with Montenegro," said Izetbegović, adding that BiH welcomed new Western Balkans Strategy.

He added that BiH is determined to maintaining positive steps that commenced in October 2014 and continue with reforms and progress in the EU accession process.

"We have two key specific goals in that regard: receiving candidate status by the end of 2018 and opening negotiations as soon as possible after that. In order to achieve those aims, the European Commission needs to publish its opinion on application of BiH for the EU membership by November 2018.  We are grateful to EU institutions and member states for their ongoing support to our EU accession process. We hope that support will continue in the future as well," said Izetbegović.

Izetbegović noted that today is a confirmation that the future of the Western Balkans is in the European Union. Achieving that goal would give a new energy to the EU vision – vision of Europe united in peace, prosperity and diversity. That is also the best way to achieve permanent stability, security and prosperity of the Western Balkans.

"No matter how many challenges or obstacles we face we must persevere on that path. There is no alternative," said Chair of the BiH Presidency Bakir Izetbegović at the plenary session of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia today, Presidency of BiH stated.
