White Armband Day marked in Tuzla

FENA

TUZLA, May 31 (FENA) - The White Armband Day was marked today in Tuzla, organized by the Youth Movement "Revolt" and in cooperation with the Citizen's Initiative “Jer me se tiče” ("Because it concerns me").

Twenty-six years ago in Prijedor, after the command of the then Bosnian Serb authorities, the non-Serb population had to mark their houses with white flags or sheets, and when they were leaving their homes, they had to wear white armbands around their sleeves, and later they were killed, exiled and taken to the camps.

Today in Tuzla, activists wore and distributed white armbands as a sign of sympathy and memory of the persecution.

They said that white armbands were a sign of a lasting fight against fascism and discrimination based on a different identity and denial of the crime.

The representative of the Youth Movement Revolt and the Citizen's Initiative “Jer me se tiče” Elmira Begić told reporters that marking the non-Serb population with white armbands was the first fascist expression after 1945 when similar ways of marking the other and the different were used.

“Today, by wearing a white armband, we send a message of fighting against segregation and discrimination of victims of war in BiH, but also solidarity with the families of victims, especially with the families of 102 killed children in Prijedor, of which the youngest was 17 months old,” Ms. Begić said.

She believes that the fascist policy that came into existence in the 1990s still lives on because parents of the murdered children are being denied their wish to raise a monument for their children, and on the other hand, politics in this area finds it acceptable for the Prijedor City Awards to be given to convicted war criminals.
