SARAJEVO, June 4 (FENA) - Roma are the most discriminated and marginalized population in Bosnia and Herzegovina, both socially, economically and politically, stressed the participants of the thematic session of the Joint Committee on Human Rights of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, titled "Position of Roma Women in BiH" which is being held today in Sarajevo.

Maja Gasal-Vražalica, a member of the Commission, said that the conference was devoted to all Roma in BiH, but that they wanted to bring into focus the Roma women, because within their own population they are fighting extreme poverty, domestic violence, under-age marriages, forced begging, poor access to education and unemployment.

„Members of the Roma associations have come to the fieldwork data that in BiH there are still prejudices against Roma in the school system and curricula and that most of the 759 children surveyed in Sarajevo said they would not like to sit at the school desk with the Roma children,“ Ms. Gasal-Vražalica added.

The president of the Association of Roma Women "Better Future" Indira Bajramović said that the realization of the "Decade of Roma" project was in progress and that funds have been allocated to improve their position in healthcare, housing, employment and education, but the situation on the ground is different.

„We can freely say that in Roma communities we are not happy with the implementation of action plans or laws that guarantee us human rights on paper that we cannot achieve in practice,“ Ms. Bajramović emphasized.

The Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Bruce Berton, said that Roma all over the world face discrimination, including in BiH, and the situation is even more difficult for Roma women, and improvement in Roma women participation in politics is one of the ways to improve their position.

The aim of the session is to inform participants, through two panels, "Social Policy and Its Impact on Roma Women" and "Legislative Framework and Mechanisms of Roma Women Participation in Working Bodies for Roma and National Minorities", about the problems faced by members of that national minority in BiH.

On the 2013 census, less than three percent or around 96,000 BiH population declared themselves as the Others, which is the category including 17 national minorities, of which Roma is the most numerous.
