SARAJEVO, June 4 (FENA) - Each year, 5 June is marked as World Environment Day with a series of events organized in Bosnia and Herzegovina under this year's motto "Beat Plastic Pollution".

It is an opportunity for representatives of the competent institutions and non-governmental organizations to point to the efforts being made in the fight against plastic pollution.

FBiH Minister of Environment and Tourism Edita Đapo, together the managers of the protected natural areas will talk about the problem of environmental pollution in Bosnia and Herzegovina with plastic waste at an event in Tarčin that will be hosted by representatives of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

The Program is a global sponsor of the World Environment Day, and is currently working with partners from the competent entity ministries, with the aim of establishing eight new protected areas in BiH.

There are currently 33 such areas which cover only about three percent of the country's territory.

Deputy Mayor of the City of Sarajevo Milan Trivić will hold an introductory speech at a film evening at Cinema City in Sarajevo, organized by the German Development Organization GIZ in cooperation with the Henrich Böll Foundation.

This year the emphasis is on the protection of bees, pollination and sustainable urban mobility, with screenings of feature films "More Than Honey", directed by Markus Imhoof and Frederick Gertten's "Bikes vs Cars".

Bosnia and Herzegovina is among the 143 countries in the world that are marking the World Environment Day on 5 June – on the anniversary of the United Nations Conference in Stockholm (1972), dedicated to the environment at which the UNEP program was adopted.

This year, the United Nations calls for action to combat the great environmental challenge - plastic pollution.

Throughout the world, millions of plastic bottles are bought each minute, and each year the planet uses up to five trillion of single-use plastic bags.

As the UN announced, scientists are still not sure precisely what kind of damage plastic does to organism, but it is known that it contains a number of chemicals, many of which are toxic or hinder the work of the hormones.
