SARAJEVO, June 19 (FENA) - Representatives of Belgrade-based association “Women in Black” today visited Foča to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict and held a protest wearing all  black and in complete silence.

Halida Konjo-Uzunović from the association “Foča 1992-1995”, in a statement to FENA said that about 20,000 women were raped during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the most numerous victims being Muslim/Bosniak women, and great majority of the perpetrators were Bosnian Serbs.

During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Foča became a synonym for mass, systematic rape of women and girls and a place known for the highest concentrated, systematic sexual violence and rape in the war.

“Women in Black today joined us to show solidarity and sympathy for women who went through the ordeal of sexual violence, to honor those who were killed and those who survived. Today, all of us together visited the "Partizan" sports hall, then we went on a protest walk to the Drina River Bridge and for the first time we visited the infamous war camp "Karaman's house", said Konjo-Uzunović.

She stressed that according to the collected data from the Sarajevo Documentation Center, speaking about the war crimes committed in Foča, 2,704 non-Serbs went missing in this town, and majority of them were Bosniaks.

Out of that number, 1,899 people were confirmed to have been killed and 853 are still listed as missing.

In 2001, for the first time in the history of international humanitarian law, in the trial against the infamous Foča trio (Dragoljub Kunarac, Radomir Kovač, Zoran Vuković), the Hague Tribunal qualified sex crimes and sex slavery in war as crimes against humanity.
