Ruiz-Calavera: There is progress in judiciary, but there are also many problems

SARAJEVO, July 2 (FENA) - Even though certain progress has been made in BiH when it comes to justice reform, there are still a lot of issues that need to be solved within the Structured Dialogue on Justice, and one of them is adoption of the Law on Courts of BiH and Law on High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC).

This was emphasized in Sarajevo today by Director for the Western Balkans at the Directorate General of the European Commission for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations Genoveva Ruiz-Calavera after meeting with government representatives in BiH.

Reminding that rule of law is one of the most important areas on the EU path, she commended removal of BiH from the grey list of countries that do not meet standards in fight against money laundering and financing of terrorism.

However, she expressed concern over wasted time when it comes to adoption of the Law on Courts, but also due to the fact that amendments to the Law on Criminal Procedure have not been adopted, which should secure a better fight against organized crime and corruption.

She added that global security threats will be discussed at the Summit in London on July 9-10 and added she hopes that Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH Denis Zvizdić will come to London with the adopted Law on Criminal Procedure which meets the international standards.

She stated she hopes that a revised Strategy for Processing of War Crimes will be adopted at tomorrow's session of the BiH CoM, which states that all these cases are to be concluded by 2023, and the EU will continue providing financial and political support in this area.

Minister of Justice Josip Grubeša confirmed at the press conference that this document states that the most complex cases will remain on the level of BiH, whereas the simpler ones should be solved by courts on lower levels.
