SARAJEVO, September 11(FENA) - The US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and the US Department of State have credible information that Mr. Nikola Špirić has been involved in public corruption and benefited from it, including obtaining unlawful gain in the performance of public duties and the obstruction of public processes during his term as a member of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, FENA learns from the US Embassy's Public Relations Office.
“When the Secretary of State has credible information that an official has been involved in significant corruption activities, section 7031 (c) (the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Act of 2018) this requires that the official and members of his immediate family be designated as persons who are not allowed to enter the United States.
Generally speaking, corruption causes significant damage to the economy, society and security, facilitates the existence of organized crime, and undermines confidence in the rule of law and the government. This directly affects the national security, economic and foreign interests of both the United States and partner countries," stated the Embassy Office.
Taking into account the circumstances of this particular case, they say they believe it is important that the authorities and the public of Bosnia and Herzegovina are aware of how serious the United States is about the problem of public corruption and the involvement of Nikola Špirić in corruption activities.
“The US Government will continue to point out the importance of the enforcement of laws in BiH that prevent corruption and provide support to strong and independent police and judicial institutions needed for any serious steps in the fight against corruption,” FENA learned.
