SARAJEVO, October 19 (FENA) - Alija Izetbegović was one of the most important individuals in the modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH and SDA Vice President Denis Zvizdić told the journalists at the Shaheed Cemetery in Kovači in Sarajevo where the 15th anniversary of the death of Alija Izetbegović, the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of BiH, the founder and the first president of the Party of Democratic Action, was marked today.

“He was a statesman, thinker, humanist, a man whose life and his work best demonstrated how to fight for his homeland. He was a fighter for an independent, united, and sovereign BiH, a fighter for freedom, solidarity and equality of all peoples and citizens of BiH,” said Zvizdić.

For this reason, he added, his words, thoughts and deeds should remain permanently imprinted in all of us and serve as a guideline to future generations on how to fight for freedom, not only of their own people, but for the freedom of all who live in BiH and how to fight for the principles of civilization, morality, freedom, equality, and overall prosperity of BiH and all its citizens.

Addressing the attendees at the commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the death of Alija Izetbegović, Zvizdić pointed out that “Alija Izetbegović spent his life honorably, proudly and while always standing upright. On this path, he was led by faith in God and a constant pursuit of human freedom, justice and dignity."

“He was a persistent fighter for the affirmation of the national identity of Bosniaks and the multiethnic character of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Indiscriminately and consistently, during his overall political life, as well as in the days of the most ruthless aggression on our homeland, he advocated for democracy, tolerance and the rule of law, rightly so, understanding that the preservation of Bosnian statehood is a key precondition for the preservation of the Bosniak people, their nationality and statehood,” stressed Zvizdić.

In his words, the political legacy of Alija Izetbegović contains messages that give answers to tangled questions of our present and future. He pointed to the importance of BiH's movement towards membership in the EU and NATO.

He pointed out that Alija Izetbegović was a statesman in the purest meaning of the word. He always gave priority to the interests of the state over partisan interests.

On the occasion of marking the 15th anniversary of the death of Alija Izetbegović, numerous delegations laid flowers on Izetbegović’s grave at the Kovači cemetery.

The delegation of the Embassy of Turkey, led by the Ambassador, together with the President of the Constitutional Court of Turkey, followed by the delegations of the embassies of Qatar, Iran, Palestine, Pakistan and others, laid flowers at the grave of Alija Izetbegović.
