SARAJEVO, November 15 (FENA) - Former Croat Defense Council (HVO) fighter Željko Marić was arrested on suspicion of war crimes against captured Bosniak civilians and Bosnian Army soldiers in the Vareš area in 1993.

Bosnia’s State Investigation and Protection Agency arrested Željko Marić, alias Ninja, in the Čapljina area on Thursday, BIRN reports.

Marić, a former member of the Seventh Battalion of the Croat Defense Council’s Military Police in Vitez, is under an investigation for allegedly committing war crimes against captured civilians and Bosnian Army soldiers.

He is suspected of contravening the Geneva Conventions’ provisions on the protection of civilians and prisoners of war in Vareš in October 1993.

“The suspect has been charged with deliberately causing severe physical pain and suffering to prisoners of war and Bosniak civilians who were detained at the Croat Defense Council Military Police premises in Vareš,” the state prosecution said in a statement.
