SARAJEVO, December 5 (FENA) - The fact that Bosnia and Herzegovina today received a green light to activate the Membership Action Plan (MAP) at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), former BiH military representative to NATO Alija Kožljak singled out as one of the most important events for BiH.

As he said in the interview with FENA, this means that BiH needs to draft the Annual National Plan, which would ultimately mean the activation of the MAP which we have waited for years, adding that during his mandate in Brussels, he continuously tried to present the progress that was made on this path, especially in the area of the Armed Forces and Defense.

He pointed out that the MAP is the highest level of cooperation with NATO, stressing that this mechanism was established to evaluate the country's readiness for full membership in NATO.

“This readiness is tested in several areas, among which is the defense sector where BiH has made the most progress, but also political and legal issues, economic issues, readiness of BiH will be tested in all of this, including the resources and security issues,” explained Kožljak, former brigadier of the BiH Armed Forces.

Therefore, through the chapters contained in the Annual National Plan, there will be challenges, and next year, BiH will, through the answers to the questions from these chapters, show whether it is truly ready, or to what extent it is ready, for the continuation of this integration process.

“In the coming period, we will see to what extent the domestic institutions are ready to implement these activities,” emphasized Kožljak.

Asked whether BiH will be able to fulfill all this, especially considering the lack of political will of all elected officials to achieve these goals, Kožljak says that he knows that BiH has the capacity to do everything to the highest level expected.

However, knowing the political situation in BiH, he anticipates obstacles of political nature when it comes to formulating the Annual National Plan, but reiterated that BiH has the capacities and potential for it, and that he believes that the Ministry of Defense will be the driving mechanism for the other institutions.

“Serbia does not have aspirations to join NATO, but it is a country partner. Serbia's cooperation with NATO is excellent, because during my term in NATO I witnessed it on a daily basis. Therefore, I believe that in the coming period there will be a common language within BiH not to make it difficult for the country to integrate fully into NATO,” said former BiH military representative to NATO, Alija Kožljak, in an interview with FENA.
