SARAJEVO, December 11 (FENA) - A handover of two terrain vehicles to the civil protection services of Lukavac and Zvornik and the presentation of the first report of the Capacity Assessment for Disaster Response and the Road Map for BiH were held in Sarajevo today.

As part of the project of Interconnection in Disaster Risk Management (IDRM), funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in the past few months, data on existing human and technical capacities were collected on the current types of operational units and response services in BiH.

The Road Map identified deficiencies in relation to the general needs of disaster response operations in accordance with international standards and identified the needs for capacity development.

The IDRM project is being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Security of BiH, the FBiH Civil Protection Administration, the Civil Protection Administration of Republika Srpska, the Brčko District Public Safety Department, the cantonal and municipal authorities, and other agencies.

Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to BiH, Nicola Minasi, expressed satisfaction that his country had a chance to participate in capacity building in the area of disaster risk reduction and improvement of the situation with the environment.

"It is a great honor for Italy to be in position to help BiH citizens in this effort," he said.

He thanked UNDP that is implementing this program, as well as everyone involved in it.

Deputy UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov said that the value of off-road vehicles that were handed over to the civil defense teams of Lukavac and Zvornik is about 100,000 KM. He noted that in addition to the Italian Development Agency, these two municipalities participated in the financing.

The first Disaster Response Capacity Assessment Report was also presented today, along with the Road Map for BiH, for which Khoshmukhamedov said that its role is building the capacities of all municipalities across the country. He added that the Road Map report points to the capacities that need to be improved.

“The capacities that need to be improved are numerous. However, we must bear in mind that it is very important to improve the capacities of municipalities, because they are the first to be affected in case of natural disaster and they are the first to tackle the problem,” said Khoshmukhamedov.
