BiH Presidency members meet with HR Federica Mogherini in Brussels

FENA Press release

BRUSSELS/SARAJEVO, January 29 (FENA) - Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik and members of the BiH Presidency, Željko Komšić and Šefik Džaferović, met today in Brussels with European Commission Vice-President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

The BiH Presidency Chairman Milorad Dodik and members of the BiH Presidency, Željko Komšić and Šefik Džaferović, thanked Mogherini for the commitment of the EU institutions to the process of European integration of BiH.

They reiterated their joint commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s full membership in the European Union.

Also, the first joint visit of members of the BiH Presidency to Brussels is a clear sign that the main foreign-political orientation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is EU membership.

Members of the BiH Presidency also informed the Vice-President of the European Commission and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy about the ongoing political situation in BiH and the process of constituting power at all levels.

A positive opinion of the European Commission and a recommendation for obtaining a candidate status during this year would provide additional impetus for accelerated implementation of the reform process and open up a clearer perspective for BiH's membership in the EU, going side by side with the countries of the region, said members of the BiH Presidency.

Replies to the additional questions from the EC Questionnaire have been completed; the competent institutions within the coordination mechanism will soon complete the technical part, so that these responses can officially be delivered to Brussels.

In response to their common message of commitment to the country's European Union path, the High Representative Mogherini welcomed their resolve to work together, stressing that their unity of action will be to the benefit of Bosnia and Herzegovina and all of its citizens. In this respect, the role of the Presidency in lowering political tensions and promoting reconciliation will be crucial.

The High Representative and the Presidency members agreed on the importance of seeing the country’s Council of Ministers and all entity governments formed without delay, so that they can address the many challenges that lie ahead. Among them are the rule of law, including the electoral reform, implementation of Constitutional Court decisions and strengthening of judiciary, as well as continued social-economic reforms.

Equally, Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to submit swiftly all the replies to the questionnaire for the European Commission to finalize its opinion on the country's EU membership application.

Federica Mogherini highlighted her commitment to the EU perspective of the country and stressed that she wants to see irreversible progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans region towards the EU by the end of the year.
