Bosnian Serb ex-soldier Cvijan Tomanić on trial for murder, disappearances

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 18 (FENA) - Former Bosnian Serb soldier Cvijan Tomanić went on trial for killing an ethnic Albanian civilian and seizing two Bosniak civilians who then disappeared in the Zvornik area in 1992.

The trial of Cvijan Tomanić, accused of committing crimes against humanity against non-Serbs in the Zvornik area in 1992, opened on Monday at the state court in Sarajevo.

“The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina has no doubt that it will prove that Tomanić committed the crime as written in the first part of the indictment,” said prosecutor Seid Marušić, BIRN reports.

Marušić also said the prosecution intended to prove that Tomanić committed the crime within a widespread and systematic attack by the Bosnian Serb Army targeting the non-Serb population in the Zvornik area.

Tomanić is charged, as a former member of the Zvornik Brigade of the Bosnian Serb Army, with participating in the persecution of the Bosniak civilian population on ethnic and religious grounds from April 1992 to the end of that year.

He is accused of killing an ethnic Albanian civilian with a handgun and ordering other civilians, including minors, to bury his body.

He is also accused of taking two Bosniak civilians away in an unknown direction, after which they went missing. Their remains were later exhumed from the Crni Vrh mass grave, near Zvornik.

The first prosecution witnesses will be heard on February 27.
