Verdict in Saša Cvetković case for war crimes in Sase and Bratunac on March 22

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 25 (FENA) - In closing statements, former Bosnian Serb fighter Saša Cvetković’s defense called for him to be acquitted of murdering two Roma women and raping two Bosniaks in the Srebrenica and Bratunac areas in 1992.

Saša Cvetković’s defense on Monday called for the former fighter to be cleared of killing two female Roma civilians in Sase in the Srebrenica municipality in May 1992 and raping two women in Bratunac in June the same year, BIRN reports.

The defense of Saša Cvetković called for a verdict of release, saying the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina had not proved the defendant’s responsibility for crimes in Sase and Bratunac beyond reasonable doubt.

The defense said the prosecution had not proved that the defendant was in Sase in the second half of May 1992, when the two Roma women were killed.

According to the defense, Cvetković returned to Sase from a deployment on June 8 or 9, 1992.

Defense lawyer Miodrag Stojanović cited what he claimed were various other discrepancies and contradictions in prosecution witness testimonies, including differences between the testimony given by the women who said they were raped by Cvetković and testimony given by another woman who was with them at the time.

Cvetković told the court he had been willing to undergo a polygraph test together with one of his rape accusers since the start of the trial.

“If I fail the test, I am ready to serve a life sentence,” he said.

He also insisted that the two Roma women were old and sick people to whom he did no harm.

The verdict will be handed down on March 22.
