Secure gender equality on all levels of government (VIDEO)

SARAJEVO, March 8 (FENA) – Securing gender equality is one of the most important links of modern democracies, but it is also a crucial human right, it was repeated at today's conference on "Bigger steps towards gender equality – joint commitment".

Conference gathered representatives of government, international and non-governmental organizations and it is organized by Gender Equality Agency of BiH and Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH on the occasion of the International Women's Day.

Minister Semiha Borovac emphasized commitment of securing gender equality on all levels of government, stating that representation of women in legislative and executive authority on all levels is around 20 percent.

She noted that after last-year's elections, number of elected women has increased to 27 percent, which she finds is a success.

Participation of women has also increased in defense system in BiH, but only 2.5 percent of women are in managing positions, and she gave an example of judiciary sector, where 43 percent are women.

Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Lars-Gunnar Wigemark also addressed at today's gathering, saying there are positive changes in representation of women.

"Male chauvinism is still present in area of the Western Balkans. It also still exists in the European Union and we are not perfect in that sense," added Wigemark, stating that BiH still does not have a strong feminist movement that is coherent and penetrating, which is necessary for significant needs.

One of the interlocutors at the conference was Ambassador of Sweden to BiH Andres Hagelberg, who stated that changes must begin now, adding it is high time to move forwards and create a sustainable and equal society.  

His country allocated approximately 2.9 million KM for implementation of the Gender Action Plan of BiH and Gender Equality Law in BiH, and he repeated that human rights and gender equality are the core of foreign feminist policy of Sweden.

Deputy Ambassador of the USA to BiH Ellen Germain stated that establishing mechanism for protection against violence and oppression is of high importance, as well as programs that will support women in all segments of society.

Results in implementation of strategic documents for gender equality in BiH were presented at the conference and BiH Gender Action Plan and the Action Plan for implementation of UNSCR 1325 for the period of 2018 to 2022.
