Šarović and Nelson discuss BiH’s imminent membership in World Trade Organization

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 18 (FENA) - In the last three years, concrete key steps have been taken in the course of twenty years of efforts to make Bosnia and Herzegovina a part of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and now the goal is in sight, said at today's meeting with US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Mirko Šarović.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, membership in the WTO is a major development opportunity because it means a significant jump for the rating of the country and the return of investments, said the US Ambassador.

Minister Šarović informed the Ambassador that the negotiations with all countries have been successfully completed, and that Russia, as the only remaining country, is ready to sign the accession agreement.

“The decision on the quality of liquid petroleum fuels, as the last obstacle for obtaining a green light for BiH membership in the WTO, has been prepared and I am ready to instruct its adoption at any moment. The problem is that we still do not have positive opinion from the entities. In addition to joining the WTO, the adoption of the Decision would bring European standards in fuel quality, cleaner environment and the regulation of the petroleum market,” Šarović said.

Ambassador Nelson congratulated Minister Šarović on the efforts undertaken to hold the largest economic gathering in BiH - the EBRD Assembly of Governors, which is an investment conference that will be held from May 7 to 9, that will put BiH on the world stage.

"It is a great opportunity for BiH to present its potentials and make a leap forward in the economic sense," Nelson said.
